For your health and safety, and that of our Court Staff, all Marriage Licenses are processed online. You do not need to drive to the Courthouse in St. George, wait in lines, or have physical interaction with the Court Staff or Judge.

You can apply from the safety of your own home or through a smart device. Payment is also done online further eliminating the need for in-person transactions. Your Marriage License application will be processed by our staff and mailed to you at the address you provide. This ensures you have a contactless experience in applying for your Marriage License.

Requirements to Apply for a Marriage License

  • Each applicant must be over the age of eighteen (18).
  • You must have your social security card available to upload.
  • You must have either a state issued driver’s license or a military ID available to upload.
  • You must pay an application fee of $75 and a processing fee of $2.40 online
  • There is a 24-hour waiting period from the time of application until you can receive your marriage license.
  • Applicants do not have to be a resident of this county or state to apply for a marriage license.
  • Individuals can apply for a marriage license in any county and get married in any county in South Carolina.
  • The license is only valid if the ceremony takes place in South Carolina.
  • The application does NOT expire.
  • A blood test is NOT required.

Note: The County where you applied for and received your license, will be the County that holds your license after your marriage ceremony.

The Probate Court does NOT perform marriage ceremonies. 

Ministers of the Gospel or accepted Jewish Rabbis and Officers authorized to administer oaths in the state are authorized to administer a marriage ceremony in this state. Please refer to South Carolina Code of Laws Section 20-1-20.


Request a Certified Copy of a Marriage License

Certified copies of Marriage Licenses can be ordered online.

In the dropdown menu, select “Dorchester Marriage” for the county.

You can search by the Groom’s or the Bride’s last name.

The total cost for one certified copy is $11.50. This fee is non-refundable.

You cannot order a certified copy until after your marriage ceremony has been performed and after you have mailed the “Probate” and “Probate/DHEC” versions of the Marriage License to the Probate Court.  After your ceremony, you must mail them to:
