Take the day to discover Dorchester County's wild side with an adventurous ride through Givhans Ferry State Park. This park has two major trails, the Old Loop Trail and River Bluff Trail. Hike the Old Loop Trail and explore the various plants, landscapes, and animal habitats or walk the River Bluff Trail for a scenic view of the Edisto River.
If you choose to take the Old Loop Trail, you’ll find that this is the easier but lengthier of the two as it stretches as far as 5.4 miles. Get moving and start your journey at the main parking area where you’ll soon come to cross S-18-30. As you follow the winding trail along the eastern boundary of Givhans Ferry State Park you’ll find an abundance of birds and other wildlife - including a few alligators roaming the lowland area! Continue through dense woods from both sides until you find yourself surrounded by sparse pine and peaceful sounds of distant birds and the wind in the trees. Once you reach S-18-30, you have two options: go alongside S-18-30 to the park entrance or return the way you came!
The River Bluff Trail may only be a short 1.5-mile loop, but don’t let that fool you. This moderately difficult trail will make for a great workout. Start your journey at the parking area, which will soon turn into a number of moderately steep slopes. Make sure to keep your head up along the way! Once you cross the canal, you’ll find yourself soon overlooking beautiful views of the Edisto River and wildlife. After crossing several footbridges, you should find the path becomes a bit wider, finally leading you to an open field. The choice is up to you here, return the way you came or make a loop by following the main park road back to the parking area.
