Fireworks are an essential part to many holiday celebrations throughout the world and Dorchester County. But if not handled carefully, they can turn a night of fun into a disaster.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) states that over 12,000 fires in 2021 alone, and U.S. hospital rooms treated an estimated 11,500 people for firework related injuries. Keep your family safe by following these safety tips.

Fireworks Safety Tips

  • Keep sparklers a safe distance away from your body or head. Sparklers can burn at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and can cause serious injuries.
  • Make sure that any fireworks you plan to shoot into the sky are not under any tree branches and are a safe distance away from your house.
  • Keep a bucket or container of water nearby to hold any discarded sparklers or douse any fireworks. DO NOT discard fireworks and sparklers on the ground, in the grass, or in the trash can without them being doused.
  • Do not light the fuse of any fireworks while you're still holding it. Fireworks can have a quick/short fuse, resulting in a faster-than-expected detonation. This includes:
    • Roman candles.
    • Firecrackers.
    • Festival Balls
  • Always light fireworks on a secure, level ground away from any easily flammable materials.
  • STAND BACK from fireworks once the fuse is lit. Never check on a lit fuse by standing directly over the fireworks and looking into the container.
  • Do not allow any children or intoxicated persons to shoot or ignite fireworks.
